It was a great institution with many chapels, corriders, rooms, cells. Everywhere it was most richly decorated. The numerous paintings seemed everywhere of a very high order of merit. Many of them were made by famous Florentine artists. Richly carved doors, mosacis, stonework, a central garden with a well from which we ::::::::: March 1, 1905.  pulled up a drink. We asked the monk to drink with us. He smiled and shook his head. We laughed -- they drink only wine in Italy. The views were magnificent from the walls of the monastery. It gives one a great sense of the tremendous importance of the church in those days. It was everything. It commanded everything. It drew to itself everything. It was the whole thing. All the interests of the people centred in the church -- or at least more than anything. Cut out from our modern lives all modern interests -- let us live to make beautiful buildings, beautiful
