Jepson Field Book volume 14 page 36
Sunningdale Lubbock as it truly was.  Lubbock told a story of , Chancellor of the Exchequer, who remarked on the marriage service: "With my whole body I do thee worship" - That's rank idolatry! "With all my worldy [sic] goods I thee endow"  - But I didn't have sixpence.  The whole thing you see is a farce!  But remarked his lady, you forget your great intellect!  Ah, Madam, but no one would every say I gave you any of that! I give the above as a sample of an English after dinner story.  I doesn't sound much, but Lubbock's cleverness helped it out and it passed very well.  :::::::::  Nov. 24, 1905. We talked a bit about Herbert Spenser and that he was more appreciated and more widely read in America than in England.  Spenser and Tyndall were disputing about atoms, said Hooker. I can see the atoms visually with the scientific eye said Tyndall.  Spenser retorted : And in the beginning there was the atom; and it was without form and void and utter darkness sat upon the form of the atom! We talked about Sir Joseph's garden full of trees which he had planted himself since returning from the Directorship of Kew.  He has many fine Californian conifers of which he is very proud, a shinning-leafed Redwood which he called my attention, and contrasted it with the opaque form. Lady Hooker I found very charming and gracious.  I should judge she must be 30 years his junior.  She is the 2d Lady Hooker.  She most cordially invited me to come again.
