British Museum (Nat. Hist.)  does so much to make things pleasant and comfortable for you that you wonder how you could get along with- out him! He has long been interested in Malvaceae but has acquired many other interests in recent years. By the resignation of Murray, due to ill-health and age, Britten becomes acting head of the Department of Botany. He has five years yet before the age limit reaches him. Many candidates are out for the position: Britten, Rendle, Fawcett who is here from Jamaica, etc. It will soon be settled. The Bakers are quakers or Friends. So was Davy. The Friends, says Baker, are dying out in England. Mr Britten is an ardent Roman Catholic. Mr & Mrs Gepp are Cryptogamists!  ::::::::: British Museum] August 13_. 1905 (cf. p.75 seq)  Having nothing special to do here in London last Sunday, Aug. 13, I  determined to go out into the country and poke about a bit. The morning was very threatening but after considerable "geeing and hawing" I started at last, at 10:00 o'clock from Paddington Station and went down to Slough. Then I "hiked" out into the English country side, headed across country for stoke Pogi's church. The maze of English lanes was somewhat confusing but after walking about two miles I came to the country church that I was seeking about 11:20. A sign warned visitors against wandering about the church during services, so I went into the church and took a seat in the rear. (Three pp [pages] ahead I describe my impressions of the church.)
