Jepson Field Book volume 10 page 6
Description:
Vaca Mts, via Mix's Canon = Weldon Canon.  - Mix's Canon = Alnus rhombifolia, plenty Fraxinus  dipetala in fl. Cynoglossum grande in chamise towards summit in  fl. - I have never seen anything that delighted my eye more than the Black Oak shrubs on the summit -- just leafing out -- the leaves an inch or so long. Some are masses of bright crimson, looking like a winter shrub that has dowered itself with spring blossoms  Others are purple, the leaves green & colored on the edge, a few  mostly light green, but most highly colored and some are accepted favorites ::::::::: May 3, 1903  at a glance. - Quercus chrysolepis, a sizable tree 30 ft. high 700 ft. below summit and several noted on ridge and in chamise coming up, the latter shrubs. - Chlorogalum pomeridianum from Little Oak valley level to summit Vaca Mts. Also Zygadenus Fremonti from alkali flats to summit ditto. But in latter case montane form may be dif. species -Quercus dumosa! (not bullata) here also. just passing fl. - Quercus chrysolepis in chapparal also.
