Berkeley - Clarke, Capt. F. L., Veterans Home, Yountville, cousin of Ward of Rochester. Returned from Hawaian Islands 8 yrs ago. Directed into botanical channels by Hillebrand. A correspondent of Gray, Eaton and Baker. Hillebrand, a physician who came to the islands for his health, government sent him abroad to collect living plants for the Hawaian Islands -- brought back a ship load. No preparations had been made to receive them. Government paid him and told him to put the plants in his own garden. Consequently had a fine collection of exotics. Later he went to Canary Islands which prolonged his life somewhat. See prev. page. ::::::::: 1897 - 99. - Trichostemma lanatum = Black Sage by Mrs. Blockman [?]. In her region the White Sage is Audibertia polystachya. Other names from her are: Beach apple = Mesembryanthemum aequilaterale. Hog onion = Brodiaea capitata. - Cat's Ears, Pussy Ears, Trinity Flower, Fairy Lanterns, all for Calochortus pulchellus. latter two from Mrs. D. O. Hunt, Apr. 30, 1897. - Hansen, Geo. Born Apr. 15, 1863. At Hildesheim, Province of Hanover. Educated at Royal Horticultural College at Potsdam. Came to America, July, 1887.
