Description:
Vacaville, 1898. - Valley Oak and wind. This is a tree of the alluvial valley soils, par excellence; even where a tree struggles out on to the adobe it is too ill-fed to compete in size with those of the rich loam. Remember the well-fed stately trees of the Alamo creek banks, and a lone tree standing out in the field at Williams', showing every mark of being a trade-wind blown tree. Not robust enough to resist the trades. The trees on the Araquipa Hill tops windblown -- trees on the n.east slope in whatever situation usually not so. ::::::::: Berkeley, Oct. 1898. - Umbellularia Californica, fruiting finely this year, never saw a tree so loaded as an individual at bridge in Strawberry Canon, milk ranch road. As many as six drupes in a cluster. On my recent visit to Mt. Diablo, Mitchell Canon, I saw fine large drupes 1 1/4 inches long. - Alder, 180 ft. below surface, artesian well, Gilroy Ranch, Spreckles Sugar Co. -- Fred Hermann.
