South Yallo Balley July 25, '97. (See p. 107) - Ceanothus (cordulatus) -- highest ridges. - Fir, 13.6 ft circ -- 75-100 ft. h. - Ceanothus prostratus Bth. - Trees Only Abies in summit of S. Yallo. - Camped all night in a little hollow just below pinnacle. Cold fearful. The next morning the wind had cleared the upper atmosphere and Shasta stood out high & close as if it belonged to some planet sailing [?] near, so effectual was the smoke & haze below. Peaks in sight: Lassen Butte, Mt. St. John's & Snow, Hull, Sanhedrin, Castle Peak, Lassic Peak, North Yallo Bally. - Arenaria congesta Nutt. ::::::::: South Yallo Balley, July 25, '97 10,225 ft. - Saxifraga near camp: pistils red; petals white, clawed with a couple of yellow dots at base of limb. = S. punctata (no. 13,479). - Aster sp. all over - Yarrow right on top. - Dwarf pine few in. h. - Low perennial alpine Castilleia: -- lip as long as galea nearly. - Aphyllon Californicum from very summit. - Pentstemon Menziesii, flowers blue reddish-purple: two white bands down throat on lower side; sterile stamen perfectly glabrous - Pinus Jeffreyi ? on highest ridges, 30-40 ft. h, mostly with broken or flattened top.
