San Jose to Gilroy Camped last night on Coyote Creek, within half-a-mile of the 12-Mile House. Railroad cut near camp. On top of the cut collected Peucedanum macrocarpum in fine fruit and Cotyledon Setchellii Jepson, which is the type locality. Had the company of some teamsters that swore and swore as was becoming their profession and birthright. June 9. Lunched on a creek beyond Morgan Hill. Passed in the morning Coyote (12 mile House), Madrone, Morgan Hill; in afternoon Rucker, Gilroy. June 10. camped last night on creek south of Gilroy. Have come 80 mi. from Berkeley. This is a picturesque camping ground, under the Sycamore Trees on ::::::::: June 9 - 11, 1896 the creek bank, in front of us a field of sweet peas, and the valley and the grand curving sweep of the interior Coast Range with Mt. Hamilton in the distance to the north. Loma Prieta ? looms up from here even; it is just opposite Morgan Hill. A number of conical peaks are to be seen in the southeast. To the southwest there is quite a high ridge with a sharp point (possibly Gavilan Mt?) [?] June 11. Reached Hollister but had to turn north again to get to Pacheco Pass. Camped in Pacheco Pass_; I was taken sick in the night and the next morning _ For an incident in the Pass see Men and Manners 5:152 (private journ.)
