The valleys were naked save for the scattered trees of the Valley Oak but along the water courses was a thin screen of trees, mainly willows, some Fremont Cottonwood and some Valley oak. Occasional Buckeyes, too, grew on the stream banks. While the Buckeye is outstandingly a tree of the foothills, there are, even at this day, a few along the watercourses. On the Alamo at Wemple Ranch (the old Williams place), there is one tree, perhaps more, near the Jewett Bridge. I noted it in flower in June, 1932. Near the Cooper School, at the same time, I noticed Ailanthus glandulosus spontaneous. -Buckeye; F.B. 1:184. -We admired vastly the Maple Tree, the Big-leaf Maple of California (Acer macrophyllum), but it is a rare tree in our region and restricted to the water courses.
