not uncommon in Lake Co. I well remember that we disturbed quail feeding in a large open in the Sierra Nevada on a trip to Yosemite. At the sound of the wagon they started running towards the brush cover. One lot after another, and still another, and yet another, almost indefinitely, - an incredible number _ I think there could not have been less than 50,000 and possibly 100,000.  This was in 1890 on my trip to Yosemite. Its flavor is very fine and its tasty meat has an invigorating quality. All the year I looked forward to Muscat time. The long dry summer wears on. The days get hotter and hotter. I make frequent trips to the vineyard but the terrible sourness of the green grapes discourages even my enthusiasm. After a great many discouragements of this kind, when it seems as if never again would there be ripe grapes, I forget for a bit, my mind rebuked so frequently, is turned away to other things. Then suddenly the muscats are ripe! One lifts the heavy foliage of the vine and there are the great white bunch
