The swimming hole in the creek is a different matter. During the summer there was a compromise as to weekdays in the matter of home bathing. We must wash our feet in a basin each night before going to bed, which ritual being performed was accepted in lieu of ablution of the whole body. But the washing of feet was rigidly exacted. It seemed to us a very useless ceremony, because were we not going right out into the dust the very next day; and
