Title:
Jepson Field Book volume 66 page 10
Description:
Making desperate efforts to recover his book. No wonder the air was tense_ _cf. p. 142; no wonder excitement reached a pitch never before known. The book was finally passed to me _ put in my dinner pail. Some one told Matt but he was too late. I was on my riding pony and away. It was Friday afternoon and all the hours were mine until Monday for those delectable pages _ a hundred marvelous adventures right in our Sierra Nevada where the grizzly at that time still existed _ alive! On Monday morning I went early to school (I had a great deal of freedom as to home and seldom did I abuse it) and turned the book over to another boy. Matt challenged me early but I told him truthfully I had it not. ::::::::: However, within two days after that Matt detected the book in transit from one boy to another and after a lively scuffle claimed his own again, and bore the book triumphantly home once more. This book was well written. The author, Theodore H. Hittell, was a newspaper man, of scholarly training, who afterwards wrote a History of California. Printed in San Francisco in 1860, the edition soon went out of print. It was not until 1911 that it was reprinted by Charles Scribners Sons in New York City and remembering my boyhood experience I purchased a copy and read it again with much enjoyment. When later, however, I tried to buy it for presents to friends, I found it had gone out of print
