Beaumont to San Bernardino - Beaumont was projected  on a boom scale,  its wide plan giving room for a great deal of filling in.  Passed on dowm into San Timoteo  Ca_on which is a very interesting road and all the way to Redlands when we passed under the south side of Smiley Heights. At Palm Springs three nights ago as we came into the village a family caravan stopped by an irrigation channel to water.  There was a  large freight wabgon with 4 horses, the two wheel-horses being Norman stock.  Behind were two led animals and a small road vehicle one horse with  :::::::::  26 May, 1914 one horse following.  The driver was a strapping fellow whom I thought heavily sun-burned but he was probably half-Indian.  His wife and the five children were plainly Indian, she full blooded.  He was good-looking and she had a rather strong and good face.  She rode with the man and two tots scarcely able to see  over the dashboard drew the one horse.  We saw them at intervals along the road and were surprised on passing Redlands to see them in the main road ahead of us, in spite of the fact that we had a light outfit and drove a a trot.  His animals were good walkers
