Title:
Jepson Field Book volume 28_170
Description:
[Simulation of Species, especially of different families.]  spm. [specimen] in U.C. Herb. [Herbarium] labeled Cym. anisatus which is very dif. [different] from the two spms. [specimens] just cited. Coll. [Collected] by T. Brandegee, Sawatch Range, Colo. [Colorado]. The leaflets in the two spms. [specimens] preced. [preceding] may be said to be divided into linear divisions; in this spm. [specimen] the leaflets are cleft or incised only. The leaves resemble Potentilla ________ very much, i.e. in Sawatch Range plant. My 9320, dried [?prob?] [probably] bad, is Gilia (Navarretia) squarrosa. It suggests small plants of Centromadia pungens wonderfully. On opening the sheet after a year I took it to be the latter thing at first. Begonia with leaves like an Acer circinatum (Dr. Houghton's study coll. [collection]. Calycadenia oppositifolia Greene. Hall 9764 Butte Co. [County] & 10,305, suggest in [?Rhus?] slenderness and habit certain Navarretia slender or wiry stemmed forms. This appears to be ecological and seasonal.  cont. [continued on] p. 173.  ::::::::: Proliferons branching due to seasonal conditions.  Oenothera trichocalyx Nutt. Farming a heavy spike first at the ground (sessile), then long stems of equal length, each with a terminal spike, the whole coiling basket-wise when dry, becoming loose under desert wind and scattering its seed like a tumbleweed.  Navarretia cotulaefolia from Antioch. See spm. [specimen] by Mrs. Curran.  Delphinium hesperium from Forest Grove, Santa Cruz Mts. [Mountains].  Centromadias and that slender little composite. Pentachaeta ?Rigiopappus.  Calycadenia oppositifolia Greene. Humboldt Road, Butte Co. [County], Hall 9764. Proliferation due to cropping of main axis.  cf. vol. 37, p. 198a.
