Jepson Field Book volume 28_152
Early botanical exploration in Cal. [California]. Some ref. [reference] is made to the work of Whitney and Brewer of the Cal. State Geol. Surv. [California State Geological Survey] by Thos. [Thomas] Starr King in a series of papers which he wrote for the Boston Transcript in 1861, on the years 1860 and 1862 also possibly. King describes a trip up Mt. Diablo with Whitney and Brewer. There are at least 23 of these letters, describing the scenery of California, the forests, the seashore, the Big Trees, the Yosemite. I have these facts from Chas. [Charles] W. Wendte who has written a book on Thos. [Thomas] Starr King which is shortly to be published.-Feb. 8, 1920. The book is now published-June 1924.  ::::::::: Bolander, H.N. - Chas. [Charles] W. Wendte, Unitarian minister, spoke most delightfully last evening at my friends the Freemans of this early Cal. [California] botanist. Bolander was generous, warm hearted and most likeable. His temperament was somewhat excitable which showed in debate. He belonged to a literary club which consisted of Bret Harte, Starr King, and many well-known S.F. [San Francisco] writers of the day. Wendte himself was a member. In early Cal. [California], the community had to depend upon itself and it is surprising how much talent was found and developed. It is said in the Talmud always step up a bit in choosing your friends; in choosing a wife step down a bit. Wendte stepped up a bit, a young fellow he was, and chose the friendship of men older than himself and thus knew Bolander, Harte and others.-Feb. 8, 1920.
