San Gregorio - San Gregorio Valley presents a rather pleasing prospect as one looks up it from the hill road leading down into the village of San Gregorio.  There is a hospitable looking hotel set behind a row of fine boxelders.  We got in at 5:10 but by 6.30 we had not succeeded, after several requests, in being shown rooms, nor did there seem any especial prospect of supper.  So we decided to hike on to Pescadero.  As we hiked up the hill a man driving a spring wagon with a good team overtook us, invited us to ride, which were not slow to accept :::::::::  August 17, 1910.  in spite of the fact that he was uproariously drunk, shouting to the horses and passersby and swearing continuously - all the while in capital humor doing and saying the very foolish things suitable to a drunken man.  "Can't I drive on the road, as much mine as the automobiles? Etc." He finally told Ryder to drive and I shall never forget his slapping Ryder fraternally on the back: "You'll make a hell of a teamster!  All right my boy!  Go it!  Youre my chef!"  The Profess of Sanskrit took it all in good part and after a burst of words
