Description:
Pacific Improvement Reserv. Pacific Grove - Pinus muricata, fruiting at 5 years. - Pinus radiata. Slender pole-like form is common on the sterile granite sand from Carmel northward through the center of the reservation. The cones are very small, 2 inches long, subglobose when open and strikingly like Pinus muricata cones. This is the variey laevigata doubtless. The cones persist a long time. Cones on main axis of trees 20 to 30 years old. ::::::::: Jan. 9, 1910. - Crest of Pt. Pinos Ridge, west slope - chaparral area where fire has been. I note the following species: 1. Gaultheria shallon Ph. 2. Vaccinium ovatum Ph. 3. Castanopsis chrysophylla var. minor. This is a low spreading scrub, but the leaves have a short abrupt-blunt point, and are trough-like (not plane), showing them to be different from Castanopsis sempervirens. 4. Arcostaphylos vestita Eastw.
