Jepson Field Book volume 26 page 190
Description:
Berkeley --------- - Dudley, W.R., "The Big Basin Redwood Park" (The Forester  vol. 7, p. 157.) A Notable Cal. Fir: Abies venusta l.c. vol.7, p. 193. - Prosopis juliflora. Cf. The Forester, vol. 8, p. 447, an article in "The Mesquite", S.J. Holsinger. - Wislizenia palmeri. No. Cal. spms. in herb. (None at all! save a mic. frag. type [?].) ---------- - Californian botanical exploration. Consult Pritzel's Thesaurus for bibliog refs. as sub. Chamisso. - Hooker, Sir J.D., Oration on by Bower (see separates). ---------- - Fritillaria liliacea, plants up to 10 in. h. growing luxuriantly in cult. grain or hay area on top hills east of San Leandro and to right of Lake Chabot road as you go east. Segments (with greenish or purplish glandular centres) to 10 lines l., to 7 lines wide. This species in this loc. prob. helped by cult. the plow breaking up & scattering the bulbs in looser soil, the pods maturing before the harvest.    ::::::::: Feb. 1913 ---------- Cont. from p. 187. After a good many days fussing I have essentially the same results as worked out for Fl. W. Mid. Cal. ed. 2 & also formerly for ed. 1. The flowers need examination to see whether there is anything worth while in shape & position of calyx-lobes. Our spp. have the calyx-tube circumscissile at middle, the upper portion & calyx-lobes falling away as one piece, a char. not noted in the books. How is it in Condalia parryi? R. obtussissima Greene, the truly truncate leaves are so by injured or poor development, as one may find such cases in acute leaves of many species of plants. ---------- - Herbaria, private. Sir W.J. Hooker built up his own herb. & mus. while Prof. Bot. at Glasgow & took it to Kew! = See Bower on Sir Joseph Hooker. Lawson
