Berkeley ---------- - Height of trees. Eucalptus globulus, 375 ft. h, acc Ency. Britt, 11th ed., vol. 9, p. 868. - Cephalanthus occidentalis. F.M. Anderson came in and described a tree as follows: "Fls. very fragrant, white, in little heads, tubular, expanding at end into a little trumpet; foliage light green; bark tan color, smooth." -- I guessed as above and I guess I am right!! He saw it on Kern River, floodplain, opp. oil district. There is a "Button-willow" station towards the head of the San Joaquin. - Stivers, C.A. "Hard & Ornam. Woods Pac. Coast, pp 536-8" (State Cal. Agr. Soc. 1873). - Cal. botanists. See early vols. Trans. Cal. State Agr. Soc.  ::::::::: 14 Dec. 1912 ---------- - Atriplex torreyi Wats. There is a U.C. spm. so labeled from Kern Lake, Davy, 2911. It has the whole appearance of A. lentiformis, the size, shape and margin of the fruiting bracts are right for that species but the bracts are distinct to the base! There's the rub. The branches are terete, not angled as in A. torreyi; the spike axes are pliable as in A. lentiformis. Now in A. lentiformis the fruiting bracts are completely united below, there's no free edge; the bracts might be united & yet show the constituent bracts; it is not so here; it is like a piece of cloth folded over to make the edge. Now in A. torreyi and in Davy's spm. the edge of the two bracts show all the way around to the base, even if so much compressed that they appear sticking to each other.
