Colorado River  Palo Verde Valley 270 ft. ---------- - A sand flat 5 ft. above water level opposite us is going off. One cannot look along its stretch of a mile without seeing several flakes flashing off at once here and there. The sound of it is exactly like the boom-boom sound of artillery guns. - Olneya tesota, 3 ft. 6 in. in circ._ at 3 1/2 ft  20 ft. h. 35 ft. broad. '13. ::::::::: Riverside Co.  30 Oct. 1912 ---------- Two of the limbs (trunks) are ascending, 2 reclining along ground. The whole tree is 19 ft. h and 35 ft. in crown diameter. Its diameter in other directions (perpendicular to that taken) is greater but was not tape measured. -- Wash near Ehrenberg.  The Catclaw (Acacia greggii Gray) covers more ground than most desert trees on account of its peculiar habit of reclining trunks. The Mesquite has a similar habit and, says Rennie, roots in this way. - Went ashore a little above Ehrenberg and took pictures of Cereus giganteus 20 ft. h. - Went into camp at Ehrenberg, Ariz. at 2:50 p.m. No. 5254.
