Brannan's Landing    Whipple Mts. ---------- middle lobe (lower lip) at base with a transverse crest the limb below round-expanded and its edges so folded as to make a sac-like structure with the opening just below the transverse crest. Stamens 4; fils short hairy. Poll: entrance to tube a rounded aperture above stamens formed by upper lip. - Brannan's place, a quartz mill being put up by a young fellow named Hull. - At Steamboat Rock we are still in sight of the Chemuhuevis Range. From our camp 1/2 mile down river the Range this morning appeared a drab or dusty color altho last night they were purple. Some of the desert ranges are so dark or black in color of their rock that they look purple nearer than the dusty ranges. The ::::::::: San Bernardino Co. 25 Oct. 1912 ---------- "purple" is an atmospheric effect of certain times of day or of weeks. The purple of the chaparral-covered ranges is a different matter and is a constant quantity. - Atriplex. Salt bush. This genus being the dominant genus of Chenopodiaceae with us the common name ought, for the family, to be Salt-bush Family and not Goosefoot Fam. which is not intelligible to our people. As the common names are not governed by rules the name of a family ought always to be taken from the dominant genus with us. - On our right below Steamboat we have for a long distance a fine view of the Whipple Mts which form bold ragged isolated masses, very distinct, one of
