Title:
Jepson Field Book volume 18 page 182
Description:
Berkeley  - Miss McDermott, Grad. student says: We have no special flora in Nevada, none at all. We use at the State Univ. any books we can get. I used Jepson's Flora of Middle California a good deal. One day I said to Professor Kennedy: Is the author of this book still alive? Prof. Kennedy thought a moment, looked at the date on the title page and said: "Oh, I guess so. He is probably one of those old sages at Berkeley with a long white beard!" Later, he ::::::::: August, 1908  came down to Berkeley and I took you to see him. After the introduction, he said, when you had gone, Why on earth didn't you tell me he was a young fellow. I think we better go back to Nevada and get out a flora if a young fellow as he is can get out a book like that!"  As one is always without honor in his own country this story was not unpleasant to hear.
