Description:
Santa Cruz [June 19, 1907] -Big Creek district, says Kron, they have taken out 6000 cords tanbark, 8000 more to take out. -Saw Edward Lilly, once with the Big Creek power company. He says there is 15,000 cords of bark still in the Big Creek. It is my feeling that Kron underestimates cordage in all this southern region for very definite business purposes. He is a consumer and not a producer merely. Lilly says that formerly S.F. tanners would not accept sacked bark. There was no explicable reason for such action, as sacked bark contains the richest pieces, chips from the ::::::::: [Santa Cruz] June 19, 1907 base of the tree. I can only conjecture that they may have been imposed upon by unscrupulous people who filled the sacks partly with refuse or stones to make a heavy weight. Still such sacks could easily have been rejected. Sequoia sempervirens. Counted the rings on a logged stump. 463 years. Diameter=5 ft. 11 1/8 inches. Santa Cruz Mts., Big Creek.
