Jepson Field Book volume 27 page 134
Description:
Santa Clara Valley, 23 June ----------  - On Monday afternoon drove from Los Gatos to Campbell and thence up one of the tongues of the Santa Clara Valley running towards New Almaden, a fine drive in country which has not been wholly "orchardized." ---------- - In the '80's and '90's if you asked any chance person in Cal. the name of a botanist, if he knew the name of a botanist the chances are very greatly that he would have known the name of Lemmon and only Lemmon. And this was natural. Mr. & Mrs. Lemmon had traveled up and down the state everywhere and had told everyone that they were botanists because they were proud to be such. In Mrs. L's eyes Mr. L. stood alongside of Asa Gray and Sir Joseph Hooker in grandeur. For had they not talked with Mr. Lemmon and taken him by the hand? Dr. Gray had even laid his hand on Mr. L's shoulder and called him "Professor Lemmon". And shall such glory fade? How transient it is! In the last (July) no. of the Bull. S. Cal. Acad. Sci., Grinnell refers to Lemmon in an aside as "an odd fellow". Of such is fame! ---------- - Meehan, Thos. An unfair comment on him in Erythea, 1:144, top of page. ::::::::: Berkeley, July 4, '13 ----------  - Chorizanthe vortriedei Brandegee. Spm. by Mrs. B. from Burro Trail, Santa Lucia Mts, June 9, '09. Invol. 2-flowered. Calyx very remarkable cleft, each division of the cleft tube with 2 lobes at top. [See image for drawing.] Roughly something like this when spread out. Calyx laid open. White in dry material. Yellowish green in dry material.  Flowers long-pedicelled, one a little higher than the other. Stamens 9, inserted at base. ---------- - Calif. Collectors. Botanical Exp. to the West. The dogmatic idea that you are right and that the other fellow is wrong and that he knows he is wrong and is acting against his conscience is delightfully expressed in Am. Jour. Sci. ser. 2, 33:387. ---------- - Eriogonum deflexum. Cf Toumey, Ariz. Bull. 22. Skeleton Weed.
