Fls. app. with leaves or slightly earlier.    disk well-developed; interior bud scales elongating.    a. Sepals free; petals evolute.        Sect. I. Spicata. A. macrophyllum.        Sect II. Palmata. A. circinatum.        Sect VII. Glabra. A. glabrum.    b. Sepals connate; petals none.        Sect. XIII. Saccharina. A. grandidentatum Nutt. B. Fls. appearing long before the leaves; disk much reduced;    inner bud scales not elongating.        Sect. VII. Negundo. A. Californicum. Dietr ---------- = A. macrophyllum Pursh. var. imbricatum OK. Wings erect, ::::::::: April 2, 1906  partly imbricated. = A. circinatum Pursh. Wings horizontal. = A. Californicum Dietr. (Neg. Calif. T. & G.)  Pax separates this from A. Negundo as follows:  A. Negundo, adult leaves below glabrous or pilose; young      branches most often glabrous, pruinose; style hidden.  A. Californicum, adult leaves densely pubescent below; young      branches pubescent (densely cinerous); style not parted      wholly to the base. (Test out above; I am skeptical.) = A. grandidentatum. Rocky Mts. Does it come into Oregon?  Sargent refers it as a var. of barbatum, Sudworth of  saccharum. = A. glabrum Torr. Two vars: var. monophyllum Graf um [?]  Schwerin, which is the var. typicum. and var. tripartitum  (Nutt.) Pax. He (Pax) makes the
