Jepson Field Book volume 15 page 142
Description:
Schaffhausen, Mar. 21, 1905 to  and then went on to Schaffhausen for the night.  (St. Gothard -- over the alps. see 5 pp. back. Crowded out. I write it here. Had a magnificent day absolutely couldless and saw the Alps in all their glory. The ascent on the Italian side is accomplised in a difficult place by a couple of spiral tunnels. Similar engineering on the Swiss side. The houses mainly of wood -- mountaineers huts -- a marked change from Italy. Fine gorges. Plenty of snow. But the treat of the day was perhaps the steamer journey down the enchantingly beautiful Lake Lucerne -- ::::::::: Stuttgart, March 22, 1906.  ---------- the continuous change of views, the windings of the lake, the Swiss mountaineers in their showily embroidered Sunday coats and finally at the lower end of the lake a view of the Jungfrau and Eiger. Mt. Pilatus stands gaurd over Lucerne town -- a town of hotels. The Rigi is obviously a splendid vantage point. I changed my mind and determined to go to the top but the next day it snowed (Monday) and Tuesday it snowed more and I went on to Zurich and in the evening to Bale.)  Lucerne! Mar. 18 1906.
