Zurich to Basle  - Went to the Botanic Garden in Zurich. Dr. Schinz was not in but a "diener" showed me about. He was either embarrassed or ungracious for he took no pains to speak distinctly. However I have often heard that the Germans will not take pains in this matter as do the French. I was shown the lecture-room, herbarium (the bundles in open pigeon-holes) and the greenhouses. In the garden are good busts of A.P. DeCandolle, Zollinger/with an Artocarpus branch in relief on the pedestal to commemorate his work in Java), Conrad Gesner in the :::::::::  Mar. 20, 1906  quaint hat of the period; and Heer. Zurich is an interesting city historically. Its new quarter is however very modern -- fine business blocks, wide streets and pavements, like the best parts of Los Angeles.  At Basle I had time to see the Museum with its picture gallery and the collection of Holbein drawings  Also went to the Botanic Institute and Garden. Dr. Senn was very hospitable and showed me over the building. They have the Bauhin Herbarium, done up in old leather volumes. Their Herbarium is small; the
