Historical Note: Henry Nicholas Bolander, German-American botanist (1831-1897), was born in Schlüchtern, Germany and moved to Columbus, Ohio at the age of 15 in 1846. He graduated from Columbus Lutheran Seminary and began working as a teacher in 1851. In Ohio he developed an interest in botany after befriending Leo Lesqueruex. In 1861 Bolander moved to San Francisco and taught with the San Francisco School District. In 1864, he was hired as the State Botanist for California for the California Geological Survey. He worked for the Survey until 1871 when he was elected State Superintendent of Schools. He passed away in 1897 in Portland, Oregon.
