Historical Note:

Vesta Florence Hesse was born in Santa Cruz County, California on 1901. She attended Boulder Creek Union High School and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Physics in 1924. She taught high school in Angel's Camp, Calaveras County from 1925-1927. In 1930 she returned to her family's apple orchard in Boulder Creek and began studying the flora of the Santa Cruz Mountains. She sent specimens to and corresponded with botanists at the University of California, California Academy of Sciences, and Stanford University including Willis Jepson, Rimo Bacigalupi, John Thomas Howell, Annetta Carter, Roxana Ferris, and John H. Thomas.

She made about 3350 collections from 1939 to 1968.

She was elected Second Vice President of the California Botanical Society in 1982. Vesta F. Hesse passed away on December 9, 1982 in Berkeley, California.
