Herb."  - "To be able at an early period of the study to commence the arrangement of plants by their flowers, and to distinguish them from each other, as well as to contemplate their structure and mutual relation is a study far more amusing and useful than a mere attention to the names and characters of the unimportant and unattractive parts of the vegetable. -- Nuttall, Introduction to Sys. and Physiolog. Bot. :::::::::  1896.  - Greene. There seem to be a good many mss [?] names of Greene in Gray Herb. For instance: "Lasthenia perfoliata Greene. Salt Marsh in San Mateo Co. May 11, 1896. E. L. Greene"  Label in Greene's hand. Name not published; looks like a good var. = ["= glabrata ? Watson"] -- W. L. J., Gray Herb. 1896.  - Clarke, F. L. was much interested in ferns, found some new ferns; also of other plants and of insects. Sent collection to Berlin, Jardin des Plantes, Kew. Knows Behr, Brandegee, Harkness, McLaren. -over-
