Jepson Field Book volume 1 page 82
Description:
Oakdale, July 1, 1896.  stachys occidentalis and Suaeda torreyana (We passed Greenville which is a stopping place for campers before reaching Altamont.) The Mountain House is within the county line of Alameda 1/2 mile. Stopped at Banta for barley and camped that June 26 night on the San Joaquin River at the Bridge _ p. 82a. -- the usual supply of mosquitoes. (Near Mossdale School). June 27. Sat. Took the road to Oakdale which runs across country in a straight line due east for miles and miles._ On this road we found plenty of the characteristic plants of the sandy plains _see p. 82b._ of the San Joaquin in good condition, Oenothera trichocalyx, Gilias, Phacelias, etc. The flora - cont p. 83 - ::::::::: _ p. 82.  [On one of my old collecting sheets, Phacelia heterophylla var. imbricata or patula, I find the locality notation: "Lower San Joaquin. On long east section lone road." Between Banta and Oakdale there was not a village or town on this road, scarcely even a house in sight. Now it is lined with villages, towns and green farms. -- Oct. 18, 1924.]  The San Joaquin Bridge is at or near the old Moss Ferry over the river. After passing the ferry, the road runs north-east a short distance, then takes up the due east direction along the section lines. The present Mossdale School (of topographic map) is near the old Moss Ferry. Name Mossdale probably derived from the ferry.
