See p. 163.    :::::::::    Weldon Canyon [Mix Canyon], Vaca Mountains  - Was a lovely place to botanize as a lad.  It was utterly wild; no habitations down to the bottom.  On May 19, 1884, I rode from Little Oak into Weldon Canyon.  I saw and collected for the first time the Crimson Sage [Hummingbird Sage], Audibertia grandiflora [Salvia spathacea].  It was a wonderful sight and its aroma made a permanent impression on my senses.  Just out of the foot of the Canyon was the home of Senator L. W. Buck.  His daughter, Emma Buck with a girl friend walked up the canyon for pleasure that afternoon, met me and had many questions to ask about my plants.  I think it will be found by calculating backward that May 19, 1884 was a Sunday - W.L.J., 12-8-'39
