Biographical Note

Freedom W. (Freed) Hoffman, teacher and amateur botanist, was born in Knights Landing, California on January 30, 1880.  He graduated from Chico Normal School and studied art in New York City before returning to California to teach school.  He married Jemella Gertrude (Jimmy) Peugh in 1907 and shortly afterward was hired as the principal of LeConte School in Berkeley, California.  While in Berkeley he studied botany with Dr. Setchell and Dr. Gardner at the University of California at Berkeley. Around 1920, he and Jimmy moved to Guerneville to manage their orchards in the area.  He developed an interest in plants growing on serpentine soils and collected over 4000 plant specimens that are now housed at the University and Jepson Herbaria at the University of California, Berkeley. Much of his work focused on the genus Streptanthus, in which he published two new species in 1952. Freed W. Hoffman passed away on November 13, 1959 at his home in Guerneville.
