Biographical Note

Annetta Mary Carter, California botanist and expert on the flora of Baja California, was born on June 18, 1907 in Sierra Madre, Los Angeles County, California.  She graduated from Pasadena High School in 1926 and attended Pasadena Junior College from 1926-1928. She received her A.B. in 1930 and her M. A. in Botany in 1932 from the University of California at Berkeley.  Her thesis, completed under the supervision of Dr. William A. Setchell, was on Riccia fluitans.

Carter began working as an attendant at the University Herbarium in 1930 as an undergraduate. She continued to work for the Herbarium until 1968, retiring as Principal Herbarium Botanist, and remained actively involved as a Research Associate until her death in 1991. As a member of the public service staff of the Herbarium, she developed long-lasting friendships with many of the visiting researchers at the Herbarium.

An avid botanical collector, Carter's early research focused on the plants of California. She frequently collected with Helen Sharsmith, Ethel Crum, and Edward Lee. Carter developed an intense interest in the flora of Baja California after a three month driving expedition along the peninsula with Annie Alexander and Louise Kellogg in 1947. She returned to Baja California more than 30 times between 1948 and 1991 and made over 5000 plant collections from the region. Her early expeditions were funded by Alexander and Kellogg; later expeditions were funded by the California Academy of Sciences Belvedere Foundation. She also led natural history tours to Baja California for the California Academy of Sciences.

Annetta Carter developed close personal and professional relationships with many of her Baja Californian colleagues and was awarded a life membership by the Sociedad Botanica de Mexico in 1975 and a prestigious honorary membership in 1987 in recognition of her botanical work in Mexico. She was a member of the California Botanical Society (including serving as secretary of the editorial board for the journal Madrono for 20 years), the Society for Women Geographers, and was one of the first female members of the Biosystematists.

She passed away in Berkeley on May 8, 1991.
